1967 was the third year that clad composition coins began replacing silver coins in circulation. It was also the final year of an attempted break away from proof coins and the use of mint marks. The SMS coins were struck to replace proofs and all coins were struck without mint marks as an effort by the U.Treasury Department to reduce collectors' interest. The SMS coins were struck using polished dies and unpolished planchets on ordinary presses, which reduced the reflectivity of the surfaces and with few exceptions the cameo effect on the devises. The coins were then processed like circulation coins which caused contact marks on the coin's surfaces. The coins in this set have brilliant surfaces with few contact marks and are match graded. The certification numbers are sequential. The set is displayed and protected from the elements in NGC's proprietary multi-coin holder. The set pictured is the one being offered.
